Who is Gertrude Mahorney?
Gertrude Mahorney was the first documented African-American woman to graduate from an university in Indiana. She graduated in 1877 from Butler University's College of Education. That is a piece of major history but yet that is all we know about her. Black Student Union is currently under a major research project led by local genealogists and researchers to find out not only who she was but what happened to her.

what we're doing...
We have established an endowed book scholarship in Gertrude Mahorney's name. If you are a student of color at Butler University with at least a cumulative 2.75 grade point average, you are eligible for this $250 scholarship.
What we plan to do...
The great thing about an endowed scholarship is that it can grow! Anyone can make a donation to the fund, so that eventually we can give more than one scholarship a year.
